Rocky Women’s Basketball Drops Close Matchup with No. 6 Carroll College 63-56

BILLINGS, Mont.- Neither team held a lead larger than eight throughout Thursday's game as the No. 6 ranked Fighting Saints defeated the Battlin' Bears 63-56.

The Battlin' Bears were the team to take the first swing of momentum in the first five minutes, led by Gracee Lekvold scoring seven of Rocky's first nine points as the Battlin' Bears took an early 9-5 lead. The Fighting Saints quickly responded by forcing two Rocky turnovers into a 7-0 run to take the lead back. Ky Oliver jumped in front of a Carroll pass and took the ball to the other end for a layup to give Rocky a 16-15 lead, but Kyndall Keller responded on the other end with a jumper to give Carroll back the lead going into the second quarter.

While the Rocky women didn't shoot particularly well in the second quarter (just 2-12 from the field), they crashed the boards and grabbed five offensive rebounds, three of which were by Tailyn Black off the bench, to keep the game close. Ky Oliver drained a free throw to tie the game at 27-27 in the final 30 seconds of the half, but Kyndall Keller again responded by giving the Saints a halftime lead with a layup before the buzzer.

The Battlin' Bears found their groove in the third quarter, led by Ky Oliver hitting a pair of three-pointers to push Rocky to their largest lead of the game at 47-40 with 3:39 remaining in the quarter. The sixth-ranked Fighting Saints stormed right back, rattling off a 10-0 run in the final three minutes of the quarter to swipe the lead back going into the fourth quarter.

Carroll would never relinquish the lead in the fourth quarter. Brenna Linse dropped in back-to-back layups at the three-minute mark to cut the Rocky deficit to just four points, but Rocky would be held without a field goal for the final two and half minutes and would eventually drop their fourth straight game.

Gracee Lekvold led the way with a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double, the first of her career. Ky Oliver added 13 points, nine rebounds, and three steals, while Brenna Linse tallied 11 points and five rebounds, four of which were offensive.

Carroll College was led by 18 points from Maddie Geritz and 16 points and 11 rebounds from Jamie Pickens.

The Rocky women (11-5) hit the road to take on Montana Western on Saturday afternoon in Dillon, tip-off at 2:00 pm (MT).
