Rocky Women’s Basketball Plagued By Cold Fourth Quarter; Drops Conference Opener 51-50 to Montana Tech

BUTTE, Mont.- The Orediggers snapped an eight-game losing streak against the Battlin' Bears as they held the Rocky women to just five points in the final quarter seal a Battlin' Bear loss in the conference opener.

Three-pointers from Ky Oliver and Gracee Lekvold sparked an 8-2 run to open the game up in Butte. Montana Tech would come scorching back, finishing the quarter on an 11-0 run in the final five minutes of the first quarter to hold a lead going into the second quarter.

After Tech's Liv Wangerin tallied an and one to open the scoring in the second quarter, Rocky found their answer with an 11-3 run to even the score at 19-19. Ky Oliver got a layup to fall to give Rocky a slim one-point lead heading into halftime.

In her first collegiate start, Brenna Linse sparked the Rocky offense in the third quarter with four offensive rebounds, leading to six of her eight points on the day. Angie Cavanaugh added two three-pointers in the quarter as Rocky scored 20 third-quarter points to extend their lead into the fourth quarter.

Unfortunately for the Rocky women, their offense went ice cold in the fourth quarter, shooting just 1-11 from the floor in the quarter while turning the ball over four times. Tech's Challis Westwater went one-of-two from the free throw line inside the final minute to secure the upset victory.

Gracee Lekvold led the Battlin' Bears with 12 points and five rebounds. Ky Oliver was the only other player in double figures for Rocky, finishing with 11 points and adding three steals.

Montana Tech was led by a game-high 13 points from Brooklynn Hankwitz.

The Rocky women (11-2) return home for just their second and third games in the Fortin Education Center this season as they host #16 University of Providence on Thursday evening and MSU-Northern on Saturday afternoon.
