Offensive Barrage Not Enough as Rocky Men’s Basketball Falls to Argos 95-87 in the Frontier Conference Tournament

GREAT FALLS, Mont.- A season that was full of ups and downs for the Rocky men came to a close after a 95-87 loss to the University of Providence on Thursday evening.

The Battlin' Bear defense was disruptive early, forcing five turnovers in the first 10 minutes of play. However, the possessions the Argos got a shot off were efficient, as they hit eight of their first 11 shots to get out to a lead as large as 13.

Rocky's offense began to fire after an early deficit, as Jesse Owens hit back-to-back three-pointers to ignite an 11-2 run that brought the Battlin' Bears back within four points. Each team traded baskets to close out the half as the Argos held a four-point lead into the half.

The second half was an offensive battle on both sides, as the Argos sank five of their first six shots to open the half and extend their lead to 13. The Rocky men continued to prove they can fill the stat sheet in a hurry, dropping in three quick three-pointers to cut the deficit again. Kael Robinson began to command the Battlin' Bear offense, scoring 12 points in a five-minute span, with his layup at the 5:46 mark bringing the Rocky deficit to just two.

While Rocky's offensive output in the final minutes was enough to put them in a position to win, the Battlin' Bears were unable to put together the defensive stops needed. The Argos scored on six of their seven shots in the final five minutes, helping them to an eye-popping 71.4% shooting percentage from the field in the second half and securing the first-round win in Great Falls.

The Argos were led by 24 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists from Davien Harris-Williams. Jaylin Reed added 13 points, 14 rebounds, six assists, and three steals.

Kael Robinson led the way for the Battlin' Bears with a career-high 30 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. Jesse Owens added 21 points, seven assists, and five rebounds. A.J. Wilson added 11 points.

The Battlin' Bears made 14 three-pointers in the loss, the second most in a single game this season. Robinson's 30 points were the most by a Battlin' Bear this season.

The 2023-24 season concludes with a 12-17 record for the Rocky men.
