Rocky Women’s Basketball’s Comeback Effort Falls Short; Lose 70-61 to No. 8 Fighting Saints

HELENA, Mont.- The Battlin' Bears brought a deficit that was as large as 18 down to just three in the final two minutes but fell just short in Helena on Saturday.

The Fighting Saints jumped out to an early lead, starting the game on an 11-4 run in the first quarter. Both teams leveled out offensively, as both sides shot 50% from the field in the first quarter.

The Battlin' Bears were held to just nine points in the second quarter, but their defensive effort kept the Saints at just 13 to hold the game within reach.

Carroll took their largest lead of the game to begin the third quarter, rattling off a quick 8-2 run as their advantage grew to 18 points. Ky Oliver helped spark the Battlin' Bears back into the contest, scoring seven points amid a run that kept the deficit at 10 going into the fourth quarter.

The Battlin' Bears never went away and made it interesting down the stretch. An 8-0 run inside of the final five minutes brought them within three points. The No.8-ranked Fighting Saints were able to hold off the Rocky women in the end with a couple of key baskets and clutch free-throw shooting.

Morgan Baird led the way off the bench with 17 points. Ky Oliver scored 12 with six assists and Brenna Linse added 12 points on 6-7 shooting from the field.

Five Carroll players finished in double figures, led by 19 points by Maddie Geritz.

The Rocky women (14-7, 3-6 conf.) return home to host Montana Western and the No. 16-ranked University of Providence on Thursday, February 8th, and Saturday, February 10th.
