Rocky Volleyball Opens up the Big Dogs Classic with a Pair of Four-Set Victories

JOLIET, Ill.- Rocky Volleyball defeated host University of St. Francis and Saint Xavier each in four sets to begin the Big Dogs Classic in Illinois 2-0.

How it Happened - vs. University of St. Francis

It was a slow start for the Battlin' Bears to open Friday's action. Costly mistakes, including six service aces given up and four service errors, saw the first set slip away as host school University of St. Francis grabbed an early lead thanks to a 17-25 win.

From there on out, however, the Battlin' Bears were dominant. They overpowered the Fighting Saints at the net, hitting .400% as a team in the second and .387% in the third set. Rocky grew a lead as large as 24-13 in the fourth and final set before a kill from Kaitlyn Wood finally shut the door to seal the Battlin' Bears' third victory of their first four games.

The Fighting Saints were led by Desiree Anderson's 13 kills, five service aces, and 21 digs. Saint Francis was held to just a .159 hitting percentage as a team and committed 22 attack errors.

Makenna Bushman led Rocky with a game-high 15 kills, adding 11 digs and two service aces. Kaitlyn Wood added an efficient nine kills on a .471 hitting percentage. Wood, along with Blythe Sealey and Taliah Triggs, put together three blocks each.

How it Happened - vs. Saint Xavier University

Makenna Bushman and Bella Bryan combined for seven early kills as Rocky came out on top of a back-and-forth first set with Saint Xavier.

However, the Cougars ran away with the second set to tie things up. A set-to-forget for the Battlin' Bears included six service aces given up, seven attack errors, and a team-hitting percentage of just .067.

While six Saint Xavier service errors worked in Rocky's favor in the third set, the Battlin' Bears held the Cougars to just a -.029 hitting percentage as they worked toward a third-set win.

Just like their morning matchup, once the Battlin' Bears found their groove, nothing stopped them from victory, spiking 15 kills on a .314 hitting percentage in the final set as they wrapped up their second victory of the day, both wins being in four sets.

Abby Gentile, Courtney Hunter, and Jenny Jensen all tallied nine kills for Saint Xavier in the loss.

Bella Bryan totaled a game-high 11 kills on a .407 hitting percentage. Ella Kincaid hit a career-high 10 kills, while Makenna Bushman set a new career high with 19 digs. Blythe Sealey finished the match with 45 assists.
