Rocky Volleyball Goes 4-0 at the Big Dogs Classic in Illinois

JOLIET, Ill.- Rocky Volleyball has won six of their first seven matchups to begin the 2024 season following a sweep of the Big Dogs Classic in Illinois.

How it Happened - vs. Mount Mercy

For the first time in the season, the Battlin' Bears went to a complete five sets against the Mount Mercy Mustangs to begin their day.

Rocky jumped out to an early lead to begin, as a block by Gabriella Panzetta emphasized an 8-1 start for the Battlin' Bears. The Mustangs would work their way back, putting together a six-point run and ultimately grabbing the first set win after holding the Battlin' Bears to just a .067 hitting percentage.

The Battlin' Bears found their offensive momentum in the second set with 14 kills on a .244 hitting percentage. Makenna Bushman tallied three kills in the final four points to knot the match up at 1-1.

The third set was a set of runs, as both teams combined for six runs of three or more straight points in the set. Rocky got their run when it mattered, capitalized by a service ace by Ella Kincaid as they grabbed a 2-1 lead after three sets.

Mount Mercy would not go out quietly. After Kaitlyn Wood secured a block to cut Rocky's deficit to just one, Mount Mercy got a pair of service aces that propelled them to a fourth-set win, 25-20.

The Battlin' Bears return a veteran group, and the team's experience shined in the fifth set, as Makenna Bushman would seal the five-set victory with a kill to begin the day with a 3-2 win over Mount Mercy.

Makenna Bushman led the way with 11 kills and 16 digs. Blythe Sealey added 36 assists, while Ella Kincaid tallied three service aces.

How it Happened - vs. Rochester Christian

Rocky seemed to have the upper hand throughout the weekend, and their matchup with Rochester Christian was no different. Rocky limited their mistakes to begin with only two attack errors and a hitting percentage of .286% to take the first set 25-18.

While the second set was back and forth to begin, Ella Kincaid helped swing the momentum with a pair of kills and a service ace to give Rocky an 18-12 lead. Their lead would never shrink smaller than five, as they sealed the second set, 25-18.

Rochester Christian made their best run of the day to kick off the third set, as three straight kills helped the Warriors to an early 9-1 lead. Rocky would respond with a run, as a pair of service aces from Ella Kincaid and a pair of kills from Liddia Fontaine brought the Battlin' Bears back to a 10-10 tie. Makenna Bushman would not let the run stop, as she spiked a pair of kills, and Brooke Ark found two service aces of her own to let Rocky flip the script from a 9-1 deficit to an 18-12 lead. Their lead would help them prevail through a back-and-forth to conclude the set, ultimately concluding with two more Liddia Fontaine kills to give the Battlin' Bears their third three-set sweep of the season and a perfect 4-0 record on the weekend.

Makenna Bushman finished the match with a game-high 12 kills and ten digs. Service was a strength for the Battlin' Bears, tallying nine service aces thanks to four total from Ella Kincaid, three from Brooke Ark, and two from Madeline Gilder
