Rocky Volleyball Splits Matches on Day One of the ShinDig Tourney

SAN ANTONIO, Texas— Rocky Volleyball returned after falling in four sets to No. 25 Ottawa to defeat Our Lady of the Lake in an exciting five-set match at the ShinDig Tourney in Texas.

How it Happened - vs. #25 Ottawa University (Kan.)

Bella Bryan paced a solid offensive first set for the Battlin' Bears with five early kills. Kaitlyn Wood spiked a pair of kills to fuel a five-point run for Rocky, giving them a 10-6 run midway through the first set. Both teams were evenly matched to begin, but Rocky never gave up their early lead to ride to a 25-23 first-set victory.

The second set was back and forth, but Makenna Bushman began to take over in the second set, as she was responsible for four kills in a row amid a 4-2 run for Rocky to take a slim 12-11 lead. Ottawa would respond in a big way, quickly pulling away from the Battlin' Bears and tied the match at 1-1.

Kaitlyn Wood caught fire for the Battlin' Bears in the third set, spiking three straight kills to spark a four-point run to lead Rocky to a 14-9 lead. While Rocky had the Braves on the ropes at set point, 24-21, a pair of attack errors led to an Ottawa kill to knot the third set back up at 24-24. The Braves would carry their momentum into sealing the third set 28-26.

Ottawa rode their hot streak into the fourth set, forcing a Battlin' Bear timeout after a kill, which gave them a 9-6 lead. Makenna Bushman and Gabriella Panzetta rallied Rocky back into the contest as Panzetta spiked a kill to tie the fourth set at 22-22. However, the Braves would have the final, as Radaisy Valdez tallied a pair of kills to hand Rocky just their second loss of the season.

Makenna Bushman tallied a season-high 19 kills in the loss, just one off her career-high mark of 20. Gabriella Panzetta finished the match with nine kills and four blocks, Blythe Sealey totaled 48 assists, and Brooke Ark (25) and Madeline Gilder (22) had over twenty digs each.

How it Happened - vs. Our Lady of the Lake

Rocky started strong against the host school, Our Lady of the Lake. Five straight points, including back-to-back service aces from Madeline Gilder, gave Rocky an early 8-6 lead. Both teams went back and forth, but another four-point run for Rocky, featuring two blocks by Liddia Fontaine, forced a Saints timeout as Rocky led 19-17. The Battlin' Bears could withstand trading points for the remainder of the set thanks to their lead, winning the first set 25-23.

Our Lady of the Lake rode impressive offensive efficiency to wins in the third and fourth sets, outhitting the Battlin' Bears by a wide margin in both sets.

OLLU were on their way to another set victory with solid momentum in the fourth set after jumping to a 16-11 lead. Liddia Fontaine helped lead the way for a Rocky rally with three kills to help them cruise back to an 18-16 lead. From there, Makenna Bushman and Taliah Triggs took the reigns, continuing Rocky's hot streak offensively to combine for all six of Rocky's final points via the kill to win the fourth set 25-22.

Junior transfer Gabriella Panzetta stole the show in the fifth and final set for the Battlin' Bears. The 6-foot-3-inch middle blocker spiked a kill and followed the kill with back-to-back blocks. Her defensive pressure ultimately forced a timid offensive attack from the Saints, which Rocky capitalized on to score nine straight points and escape with a five-set victory despite an early deficit.

Liddia Fontaine set a new career high with 16 kills, and Ella Kincaid grabbed a new career high of her own with 28 assists. Gabriella Panzetta finished with five blocks, and Brooke Ark totaled 30 digs in the victory.
