Rocky Volleyball Finishes 2-2 at the ShinDig Tourney in Texas

SAN ANTONIO, Texas— After a rough start against No. 24 ranked Kansas Wesleyan, the Battlin' Bears didn't let their early loss weigh them down, defeating John Brown University in straight sets to conclude their non-conference schedule.

How it Happened - vs. #24 Kansas Wesleyan

The final score of a three-set sweep doesn't necessarily indicate the match for the Battlin' Bears, as Rocky was competitive throughout.

Madeline Gilder found a gap in the Coyote defense in the first set for a service ace that tied the match at 10-10 to begin. With the teams trading points back and forth, Bella Bryan spiked a kill to keep the score at 16-18. Kansas Wesleyan separated themselves with an impressive run to end the first set, scoring six straight points and eventually winning the first set 19-25.

Despite a sizeable deficit in the second set, the Battlin' Bears caught fire at the end, erasing a 17-9 deficit and turning it into a 22-20 lead. Ultimately, Kansas Wesleyan found their answer to close the set with a 25-23 win.

The third and final set was back-and-forth throughout, with Rocky holding some momentum after a service ace from Brooke Ark forced a Kansas Wesleyan timeout with the match tied 23-23. Unfortunately, the Coyotes came out of the timeout with a response and extinguished the Battlin' Bear's momentum to take a three-set victory.

Makenna Bushman led the way for Rocky with ten kills in the loss. Kaitlyn Wood tallied seven kills along with five blocks. Kansas Wesleyan hit .275 overall as a team, the highest mark given up by Rocky so far this season.

How it Happened - vs. John Brown University

After a disappointing start to the day, the Battlin' Bears had very little time to regroup and respond against John Brown University, taking the court against the Golden Eagles.

Regrouping and responding is precisely what Rocky did on Saturday, leaving no doubt in a three-set sweep of John Brown University. The Battlin' Bears set a season-high hitting percentage as a team, combining to hit .289 overall. Rocky has only three matches since the beginning of the 2023 season with a higher hitting percentage. Their 45 assists and 48 kills were the most in a three-set match this season.

Liddia Fontaine spiked a game-high 12 kills. Makenna Bushman and Kaitlyn Wood had 11 kills a piece, and Blythe Sealey finished the game with 39 assists.

Up Next

The Battlin' Bears (8-3) will have a week off of competition before they turn their attention to the conference schedule opener against No. 21 Montana Tech in Butte on Friday, September 13th.
