Rocky Football’s Comeback Effort Falls Short at Carroll College

BILLINGS, Mont.- Rocky Football was unable to overcome a slow start offensively, falling to Carroll College 16-13 in Helena on Saturday.

How it Happened

The Battlin' Bear offense struggled throughout the first half, being held without a first down until the midway point of the second quarter. Carroll College took advantage of the slow start, kicking a short field goal on their second drive of the game, and was set up for a short touchdown drive after a Rocky was unable to get a punt off deep inside Fighting Saints' territory, as Carroll held a 10-0 lead going into the second quarter.

Carroll would get another field goal thanks to a circus catch from Carson Ochoa, but the Battlin' Bear defense held firm to keep Carroll out of the end zone. Ultimately, the Battlin' Bears still trailed 13-0 early in the second quarter. While the offense struggled to find momentum, the defense held strong to hold the deficit at 13-0 going into the half.

The Battlin' Bears had their first points come on their second possession of the second half thanks to a good balance of run and pass to get them deep inside Carroll territory. After a quarterback sneak from Graedyn Buell converted a 4th and one on the Carroll 13-yard line, the offense stalled out, and Austin Drake converted a 35-yard field goal to get Rocky on the board, trailing 13-3 with four minutes left in the third quarter.

Rocky showed life in the fourth quarter, forcing a punt to begin the quarter. The tandem of Graedyn Buell and Ben Rooney pushed the Battlin' Bears down the field on a 16-play, 81-yard drive that led to Austin Drake's second field goal of the day from 20 yards out to cut their deficit to seven. The game's momentum entirely shifted to the hands of the Battlin' Bears, forcing a three-and-out after John Aragon got in the backfield for a sack on third down. Rocky continued their push, driving down the field and capitalizing with a 23-yard strike from Graedyn Buell to Joseph Dwyer to tie the game at 13-13.

Carroll responded with a big play of their inside of two minutes, as Jack Prka found Lincoln Holmes for 33 yards to set the Saints up inside Rocky's 10-yard line. The Battlin' Bears again held strong, holding Carroll to a field goal to get the ball back with 1:35 remaining and no timeouts. After a completion and a rush by Graedyn Buell got the Battlin' Bears a first down, Buell was hit as he threw, and the ball found a Carroll defender to seal a Rocky defeat in Helena.

Notable Statistics

Graedyn Buell finished the afternoon 13-28, passing for 121 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Buell was also Rocky's leading rusher, running for 56 yards.

Joseph Dwyer totaled five receptions for 69 yards and a touchdown, while DeNiro Killian Jr. grabbed six catches for 46 yards.

Defensively, Dylan Deines finished with seven tackles to lead Rocky and a pass breakup.

Rocky was outgained offensively 196-341 in total yardage, but Rocky's defense allowed just one touchdown total, aided by advantageous field position for Carroll. Rocky's defense held the Fighting Saints to 3-15 on third-down conversions and totaled three sacks.
