Tomlin Skies For A-Standard Mark; Davis Breaks 60-Meter Hurdles Record in Successful Outing in the Myrle Hanson Open

SPEARFISH, S.D.- Braden Tomlin recorded the third-best Pole Vault mark in the NAIA this season, while Charlize Davis bested her own school record to highlight a strong day in South Dakota for Rocky Track and Field. 

Women's Notable Results

Charlize Davis turned in a pair of personal bests in Spearfish on Saturday, most notably breaking the program record in the 60-meter hurdles, winning the event with a finish of 8.91 seconds. Her finish falls just short of the B-Standard qualifying mark of 8.87 seconds. Davis also took second place in the 60 meters with a time of 7.91 seconds, ranking ninth in program history.  

Kellan Wahl was victorious in the 60-meters, finishing in 7.85 seconds, tying herself for the third-best finish in program history. Wahl also took second place in the 200 meters with a time of 26.98 seconds, the eighth-best finish in school history. 

The Battlin' Bear 4x400 meter relay team of Tyne Stokes, Rylie Schoenfeld, Kallyn Wilkins, and Maya Pearcy took first overall with a time of 4:18.81, the fourth best time in program history. 

Tyne Stokes grabbed second place in the 400 meters at 1:02.98, the seventh-best finish in school history. 

Kallyn Wilkins and Maya Pearcy finished third and fourth place in the 800-meters, with Wilkins crossing in 2:25.98 and Pearcy following a step behind in 2:26.12. 

Grace Timm won the 3,000-meter race with a time of 11:00.64, a new personal best. She also took third in the mile with a time of 5:21.15. 

The Rocky women took second place overall with a team score of 105, trailing host school Black Hills State by 10.5 points. They bested NCAA DII programs MSU Billings, Chadron State, and future Frontier Conference opponent Dickinson State. 

Men's Notable Results

Braden Tomlin punched his ticket to the NAIA Indoor National Championships with a mark of 4.85 meters (15' 11") in the pole vault. His leap is second in program history behind his own mark of 4.90 meters. The mark is the third-best vault in the NAIA this season, as he and teammate Jay Jetmore are two of just 11 NAIA male athletes to reach a qualifying mark this season. 

Ryan LaMere recorded the third-best time in program history in the 60 meters, finishing third overall in the finals at 7.09 seconds. He also took fifth in the 200 meters with a time of 23.47 seconds, ranking sixth in program history. 

Trystin Chapel won the men's triple jump with a leap of 12.93 meters (42' 5.25"), the third-best mark in program history. He also took third place in the men's long jump with a final mark of 6.50 meters (21' 4"), which also was the third-best mark in program history. 

Freshman Campbell Smith recorded a final mark of 1.78 meters (5'10") in the high jump, tying the fourth-best leap in program history. Smith passed 1.68 meters, 1.73 meters, and 1.78 meters in his first attempt before bowing out at 1.83 meters. 

Robby Gress tallied a new personal best in the 60-meter hurdles, taking second place with a time of 8.90 seconds that ranks fourth in program history. 

Freshman John Spinti broke out for a first-place finish in the mile, crossing the line in 4:27.07. Spinti also took second in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:01.16. 

Seth Petsch took second in the 400 meters with a time of 52 seconds, even. 

The Battlin' Bear men took second overall with a team score of 104, just 1.5 points behind host school Black Hills State. Rocky finished ahead of DII opponents Chadron State, MSU Billings, and South Dakota Mines, as well as NAIA and future Frontier Conference foe Dickinson State.

Rocky Track and Field will stay in Montana next weekend, traveling to Bozeman on Friday, January 31st, to compete in the Bobcat Performance meet.
