Rocky Men’s Basketball Grinds Out 66-60 Victory Over Park-Gilbert

CHANDLER, Ariz.- Rocky's defense held Park-Gilbert without a field goal over the final five minutes of play to secure a six-point victory in the first game of the Cactus Classic.

Sherman Royal III totaled a season-high 17 points to lead the way for Rocky in the victory.

How It Happened

Rocky's defense showed up early, holding the Buccaneers to just six points over the first seven minutes of the game to jump out to a 14-6 lead, having five different Battlin' Bears score early in the contest. Momentum would flip for the next four minutes with an 11-2 run for Park-Gilbert, who snagged a 17-16 lead back from the Battlin' Bears. Rocky would battle on both ends, hitting seven of their last 11 shots of the first half and forcing five Buccaneer turnovers over the final nine minutes to hold a five-point lead going into halftime.

After Park-Gilbert scored the opening possession of the second half, Rocky would extend their largest lead of the contest with an 11-4 run following the first media timeout of the half. The Battlin' Bear offense would go cold for the next five minutes, leaving a path for another Park-Gilbert run that cut their deficit down to one inside ten minutes to play. With a back-and-forth game going, Park-Gilbert would drill a three-pointer with 5:23 left in the game to cut their deficit to four, but that would be the final field goal they would score in the contest. While the Buccaneers would convert seven of eight trips to the free throw line in that span, the Battlin' Bears were successful on five of six, along with key layups from Sherman Royal III and Carter McCoy to hold on for a 66-60 win in the first day of the Cactus Classic.
