Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Brandon Stinson | Sports Information & Media Coordinator

(RV) Rocky Men’s Basketball Handles No. 4-Ranked Montana Tech 81-70 in Butte

BUTTE, Mont.- Omari Nesbit poured on a game-high 24 points to lead Rocky Men's Basketball to a commanding victory over No. 4-ranked Montana Tech.

The win for Rocky's men marks the first win in Butte since February 2019, as the Battlin' Bears have won three of the last four regular-season matchups against the four-time defending conference champions. Friday's win also marks the second road victory this season for Rocky's men over a top-five opponent.

How It Happened

Rocky's defense was excellent to open the contest, forcing misses on Montana Tech's first six field goal attempts en route to an 11-3 start to the contest. The Orediggers would have a quick response, taking just two minutes to total an 8-0 run to tie the game back up at 11-11. While much of the first half was a defensive battle, the offense heated up in the final five minutes. Omari Nesbit was the catalyst for Rocky, scoring eight of his 15 first-half points in the final five minutes, giving the Battlin' Bears a five-point halftime advantage.

After Montana Tech scored the opening four points of the second half, a pair of and-ones from Sherman Royal III and Omari Nesbit sparked an 11-2 run that gave Rocky a double-digit lead with 14 minutes to go. Carter McCoy would also add a bucket through a foul, while Mekhi Jourdan would sink a three-pointer through another foul to spark a quick 7-0 run for a seven-point swing in two possessions en route to a 15-point lead with 12 minutes to play. Rocky's offense would be silenced temporarily, missing five straight shots from the field to pave a path for a 7-0 Oredigger run to cut their deficit back to single digits. This momentum swing wouldn't phase the Battlin' Bears in the slightest, as over the next five minutes, Rocky would piece together a 16-7 run, fueled by a pair of Drew Bowman threes, the second of which was ultimately the dagger in the contest, giving the Battlin' Bears a 19-point lead, their largest lead of the contest, to force the bench units in for both teams and seal a Rocky road victory.
