PREVIEW: Rocky Track and Field Sizes Up Strong Competition at Mountain State Games in Pocatello Friday and Saturday

2/14/2025 12:03:00 PM

POCATELLO, Idaho.- Rocky Track and Field will line up against numerous NCAA DI teams in Idaho on Friday and Saturday.

The meet is scheduled to begin on Friday with multi-events at 10:00 a.m. and track and field events at 3:00 p.m. Saturday's action will also begin with multi-events at 10:00 a.m. and the remaining events at 11:15 a.m.

With their final meet of the regular season taking place after the qualifying window for the NAIA Indoor National Championships, this weekend will be the last chance for the Battlin' Bears to achieve qualifying standards.

Competing teams include NAIA foes Carroll College, College of Idaho, Montana Tech, Montana Western, and the University of Providence. Other participating teams include NCAA DI teams BYU, Idaho State, Utah State, Utah Tech, Utah Valley, and Weber State, NCAA DII teams Western Colorado and Westminster, and NJCCA teams Salt Lake CC, Snow College, and Southern Idaho.

Last Time Out

Two Battlin' Bears earned qualifying marks the last time Rocky competed on January 31st.

Charlize Davis broke her own school record and earned her first qualifying mark of 8.80 seconds in the preliminaries before improving on her mark in the finals with a finish of 8.75 seconds (altitude adjusted to 8.77 seconds) to take second place. Her finals time was the 12th fastest time in the NAIA, securing her second straight trip to Indoor Nationals.

Grace Timm also secured a trip to Gainsville on Friday, finishing with a time of 5:13.92 in the mile. The altitude conversion to 5:04.14 ranks ninth in the NAIA this season, securing her second career trip to NAIA Nationals in track and field and her first as a Battlin' Bear (competed in Outdoor Nationals in 2023 at Dickinson State).

Kellan Wahl toppled her own program record in the 60 meters, running a time of 7.72 seconds in the preliminaries and 7.74 seconds in the finals to take second place overall. She also secured the 200-meter record with a time of 26.50 seconds to take third place. Wahl overtakes Bailey Bard's record of 26.54 seconds set in 2017.

Freshman Campbell Smith grabbed the new program record in the high jump, recording a final mark of 1.90 meters (6' 2.75") in his third collegiate meet. Smith also lept a personal best of 5.82 meters (19' 1.25") in the long jump.

Ryan LaMere tied his school record in the preliminaries with a finish of 7.03 seconds in the 60 meters. LaMere finished fourth overall with a 7.12-second finish in the finals.

Trystin Chapel secured his second program record in his early Battlin' Bear career, placing second overall in the long jump with a final mark of 6.73 meters (22' 1"). He also surpassed his previous record in the triple jump with a mark of 13.43 meters (44' 0.75").

Preview (Women's)

After continuing to improve her school record time in the 60 meters, Kellan Wahl will look to whittle down her time to meet the B-Standard mark of 7.65 seconds. Wahl finished in 7.74 seconds (adj.) in Bozeman two weeks ago. Charlize Davis and Baylee Young will also join Wahl in the 60-meter dash.

Wahl will also look to improve on her newly acquired 200-meter program record, chasing the B-Standard time of 26.17 seconds.

Baylee Young will make her second career start in the 400-meter after a 1:04.65 (adj.) finish in Bozeman last meet, narrowly missing out on a top-ten finish in program history.

Rylie Schoenfeld will compete in the 600-meter, the first Battlin' Bear to compete in the event since Carrie Daniels did so in February of 2020.

Kallyn Wilkins will look to join her teammate Grace Timm in the mile in Gainsville. Wilkins' season-best is 5:14.54 (adj.), which she ran in Bozeman on January 31st, as she will seek the B-Standard qualifying mark of 5:06.00. Joining Wilkins in the mile will be Maya Pearcy, Lauren Rodacker, and Tyne Stokes

Rylie Schoenfeld and Hannah Geisen will both compete in the 3,000-meters for the first time this season.

Jayden Woodland will run her first 5,000-meter race of the season and the first of her indoor track and field career. In March 2023, she ran the 5k in 19:30.85 in an outdoor meet.

The Rocky women will also enter a Distance Medley Relay team, an event they combined for a qualifying mark in the 2022-23 season. Kallyn Wilkins is the lone returner from that qualifying group, as she will be joined by Maya Pearcy, Tyne Stokes, and Grace Timm

Brooke Wirkkala and Charlize Davis will enter in the women's long jump. Davis will be competing for the first time in indoors in her career, while Wirkkala will look to improve on her program record of 5.20 meters.

Hannah Christman lept a new personal best of 3.05 meters in the pole vault in her last meet and will look to improve that mark on Saturday.

Preview (Men's)

Freshman Abram King will compete in his first Heptathlon competition of his collegiate career starting on Friday morning. He will run the 60-meter and compete in the long jump, high jump, and shot put on Friday before competing in the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault, and 1000-meter on Saturday morning.

Ryan LaMere will chase a sub-seven-second 60-meter race, entering the weekend with a program record of 7.03 seconds. Chad Lindsay and Trevor Walter will join him in both the 200-meter and 60-meter races.

Seth Petsch will look to make his second trip to the NAIA Indoor Championships in the 800-meter. He came less than two seconds shy of a B-Standard time of 1:54.00  at the Bobcat Performance meet, finishing in 1:55.95.

Four Battlin' Bears have clocked sub-4:25.00 miles this season and all four will chase a qualifying time of 4:13.50 on Saturday, led by Matthew Conrad, John Spinti, Caleb Tomac, and Corbyn Svec. Zachary Zwiesler, Ashtyn Rask, Henry Cooke, and Eniah Boseman will also join them.

A group of five Battlin' Bears will be chasing their head coaches' program record in the 5,000-meter, as Justin Glass, John Spinti, Corbyn Svec, Joseph Orndorff, and Zachary Zwiesler will all compete in the 5,000-meter on Friday evening. Svec, Glass, Orndorff, and Spinti have all run top ten times in program history in their careers.

The Rocky men will compete in their first Distance Medley Relay team since the 2021-22 season. Ashtyn Rask, Seth Petsch, Caleb Tomac, and Matthew Conrad will round out the DMR team for the Battlin' Bears.

Campbell Smith set a new program record in the high jump in his last competition and will look to inch closer to the B-Standard mark of 2.03 meters on Saturday.

Braden Tomlin and Jay Jetmore will look to improve their qualifying marks. Jetmore is eyeing the 4.85-meter A-standard vault.

Trystin Chapel has already impressed in his freshman season, as he closes in on the B-Standard mark of 7.08 meters in the long jump, which he will look to achieve this weekend.
