Chapel Earns Top Long Jump Mark in the NAIA; Multiple Program Records Fall at Yellowjackets/Battlin’ Bears Icebreaker Open

BILLINGS, Mont.- Freshman Trystin Chapel secured a trip to the NAIA National Championship in his outdoor collegiate debut, while other Battlin' Bears secured program records in the opening meet of the Outdoor Track and Field season. 

Women's Notable Results

Brooke Wirkkala surpassed her school record in the women's high jump, finishing with a final mark of 1.65 meters (5-05.00), coming just short of a B-Standard mark in her first outdoor competition of the season. 

Charlize Davis surpassed the program record in the long jump, leaping 5.59 meters (18-04.25) to win the event. Brooke Wirkkala earned runner-up honors as she tied her previous personal best and former program record of 5.39 meters (17-08.25). 

Kellan Wahl set a new program record in the 100-meter, crossing the line in 12.23 seconds, defeating her previous record of 12.54 seconds. Charlize Davis also tallied a top-ten performance, finishing in 12.74 seconds, ranking sixth all time. 

Kellan Wahl also placed second in the 200-meter with a time of 26.40 seconds, the fourth fastest time in program history. 

The women's 4x100 meter relay team of Kellan Wahl, Baylee Young, Brooke Wirkkala, and Charlize Davis ran the second-best time in program history, finishing in 50.04 seconds. 

The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Tyne Stokes, Maya Pearcy, Grace Timm, and Rylie Schoenfeld turned in the fourth-best time in program history, crossing the finish line in 4:16.90. 

Men's Notable Results

The men's long jump program record set by Braden Tomlin in 2023 (6.56m) was surpassed twice by Battlin' Bear jumpers on Saturday, as freshman Trystin Chapel leaped an A-Standard mark of 7.47 meters (24-06.25), breaking the program record, earning the top mark in the NAIA early this season, and becoming the first NAIA jumper to make an A-Standard mark in the long jump. The Billings Senior graduate set a new personal best in his first outdoor collegiate meet with a mark that would have placed fifth in the 2024 Outdoor NAIA National Championships. 

Drifter Skillicorn also leaped a personal best and a mark that surpassed the previous program record, jumping 6.76 meters (22-02.25). 

In his outdoor collegiate debut, Ryan LaMere ran the second-fastest 100-meter time in program history, finishing third overall with a time of 11.10 seconds. 

Campbell Smith tied the fifth-best mark in program history in the men's high jump, taking second overall with a leap of 1.80 meters (5-10.75). 

The Rocky men dominated the 1,500-meter race, sweeping the top five places. Matthew Conrad, who finished in 4:04.04, led the way with an individual victory. 

Drifter Skillicorn finished third in the men's 200-meter race, running 23.00, the tenth-fastest time in program history. 

Rimrock Rivalry

The Rocky men earned a team victory, totaling 203 points overall. This victory gives them 15 points in the Rimrock Rivalry series. On the women's side, MSU Billings earned the team victory with 193 total points, giving the Yellowjackets 15 points. 

The final Rimrock Rivalry event will occur next Saturday as both track teams compete again at Lockwood High School.
