Dominant Second Half Offense Leads #11 Rocky Men’s Basketball Past Valley City State to Close the Regular Season

MOORHEAD, Minn.- The Rocky men scored nearly 60 second-half points on their way to a rout of the Vikings on the road, securing their 15th straight victory to close the regular season.

In a game that was inconsequential for the conference tournament seeding for Rocky, the Battlin' Bears didn't keep their foot off the pedal, finishing the regular season strong with a lopsided win on the road. The Rocky defense continues to shine, holding their opponents to under 70 points for six straight games.

How It Happened

The first half was a defensive slugfest for both sides throughout. Valley City State opened the contest with a 4-0 advantage, but a 15-4 response from Rocky would give them a lead they would never relinquish. A quiet final five minutes of the half saw both teams combine for just eight points, leaving Rocky with a five-point halftime lead.

Rocky would make a game-defining run midway through the second half: a 21-0 run over a four-minute span turned a 10-point lead into a 31-point lead with just under 11 minutes to play. The Battlin' Bear offense would not slow down in the second half, shooting just under 60% from the field and draining ten second-half three-pointers on their way to a 30-point blowout victory.

Notable Statistics

Omari Nesbit totaled a game-high 26 points, along with four rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Mekhi Jourdan added an efficient 15 points, hitting six of his seven shots from the field, while also adding five rebounds. Kyle Jones contributed 15 points off the bench, while Drew Bowman drew the start on Saturday, adding 11 points.

The Rocky men shot 47.8% from the field and 52% from three, draining 13 on the night.  The Battlin' Bears outrebounded the Vikings 38-26, snagging 15 offensive rebounds. Rocky forced 18 Valley City turnovers, turning those into 20 points off turnovers.

Kaleb Larson was the Vikings' leading scorer with 18.
