First Half Deficit Too Much to Overcome as Rocky Men’s Basketball Falls to OUAZ 91-78

CHANDLER, Ariz. Dec. 16, 2022- A slow start for the Battlin' Bears proved to be too much to overcome as they fell to Ottawa University-Arizona 91-78 to open up the first of three games in the Cactus Classic.

It was a first half to forget for the Battlin' Bears on both sides of the floor. Offensively, Rocky only scored 26 points on 7-28 shooting and 1-7 from three point range in the first period. On the defensive side, the Battlin' Bears gave up 44 to the Spirit on 19-41 shooting.

The second half picked up for the Battlin' Bears as they found their way and outscored OUAZ 52-47, but the 18 point deficit was too much to handle as the Battlin' Bears fell by a final score of 91-78.

"We had such a slow start on both ends it was hard to get any rhythm." Coach Bill Dreikosen said. "They are a tough team and we didn't respond until the second half. I'm proud of how we never quit and the team played much better in the second half."

The Battlin' Bears were led by 17 points and four rebounds off the bench from Kace Kitchel. Maxim Stephens finished with a double double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, while Tayshawun Bradford tallied 13 points in only 15 minutes of play off the bench.

The Spirit were led by a dominant performance from Josiah De'laCerda, as he finished with 31 points and eight rebounds, while Alex Villi ended with 18 points and three steals to lead Ottawa to the victory.

Rocky (6-4) will take on Menlo College Saturday afternoon, tipping off at 2:00pm.
