Battlin’ Bears Break Five School Records in Successful Myrle Hanson Open

SPEARFISH, S.D- Rocky Indoor Track and Field attended its first meet as a full team this weekend in the Myrle Hanson Open, hosted by Black Hills State University.

The Rocky women saw a great deal of success in Spearfish. Freshman Brooke Wirkkala, also a member of the Rocky Volleyball team, broke two Rocky records in her first indoor meet. Wirkkala won the women's long jump with a jump of 5.20 meters (17-feet-¾-inches) and took third place in the women's high jump, clearing 1.55 meters (5-foot-1-inch), both of which set new school records.

Sydney Little Light continued her usual pace of dominance, as she took first place in the mile, finishing in 5:18.89, and in the 3000 meters, finishing in 10:19.03, which is below the NAIA-A Standard qualifying time.

Lauryn Frideres, a freshman from Billings West HS, took first place in the women's triple jump with a jump of 10.27 meters (33-feet-8.5-inches) to set a new Rocky record. Frideres also took second place in the women's long jump with a longest jump of 4.89 meters (16-feet-½-inches).

Kellan Wahl set a new Rocky record in the 60 meters race, running a 7.88 second mark in the preliminaries, then taking third place by running 7.95 seconds in the finals. Wahl also took sixth in the 200 meter, running in 27.50 seconds, and second in the 400 meter, finishing in 1:02.93, which also set a new Rocky record.

The Battlin' Bears took all top four positions in the women's one mile race, after Little Light's first place, Jayden Woodland, Kallyn Wilkins, and Rylie Schoenfeld all followed in that order.

On the men's side, Jackson Wilson took first place in both the one mile, finishing in 4:22.65, and in the 800 meters, finishing in 2:00.27.

A duo of freshmen turned out good performances on the men's side, as Justin Glass took second in the 3000 meters, finishing in 9:51.16, and Seth Petsch finished in fourth place in the one mile, crossing the finish line in 4:50.24.

Cameron Hone tied for second place in the men's pole vault, vaulting 4.15 meters (13-feet-7.25-inches).

The Battlin' Bears will be back in action in the Bobcat Challenge, hosted by Montana State University on Friday, January 20th and Saturday, January 21st.
