Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Brandon Stinson | Sports Information & Media Coordinator

Rocky Men’s Basketball Falls 91-81 to Marian University

Robinson notches a game-high 27 points and his sixth double-double this season in Rocky's second loss of the year.

CHANDLER, Ariz.- The Battlin' Bears overcame another slow start in Sunday's game, but ultimately fell short against Marian to snap their six-game win streak.

Another frustrating first half for the Battlin' Bears at the Cactus Classic, as it was all Marian to start. The Knights started on a 17-2 run, hitting seven of their first 12 shots and sinking all three of their three-point attempts in the first five minutes of play. Kael Robinson made a jumper fall in the first 90 seconds of the game and the Battlin' Bears would not have a field goal make until a Luca Brooks three-pointer with 9:27 on the clock. Rocky began to find offensive momentum in the final nine minutes, but could not contain the Marian offensive attack. The Knights hit nine three-pointers and shot 50% from the field in the half to build a 19-point lead going into halftime.

After their halftime adjustments, the Battlin' Bears came out of the locker room firing for the second consecutive game.

A.J. Wilson started the half with a three-pointer and the Battlin' Bears took off on a 17-9, as Jesse Owens, Elliott Brooks, and Kael Robinson all sunk threes in the first five minutes of the half. The scoring wouldn't stop there, however, as after Jesse Owens hit a pair of technical free throws, Rocky continued on a 13-3 run. Liam Romei and Cade Tyson hit threes on back-to-back possessions to cut a deficit that was once 25 points, down to just two with 11 minutes to go.

Marian's Gus Etchison began to take over in the second half, as the athletic guard scored 14 of his 25 points in the final 10 minutes of play. The Battlin' Bears went back and forth through the final 10 minutes of play, but Marian would outscore Rocky on their way to an upset victory.

Kael Robinson led all scorers on the day with 27 points, including a perfect four-of-four from three, while also grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds in the loss. Jesse Owens added 20 points and seven assists. The Battlin' Bears shot 39.3% from the field and three-point range, hitting 11 threes on the day. Rocky made it to the free throw line 30 times, hitting 22 of their attempts.

Both teams controlled possession well, as the two teams combined for just 16 turnovers, but it was a physical matchup that resulted in a combined 33 fouls called.

The Knights were led by 25 points each from both of their leading scorers, Brody Whitaker and Gus Etchison. Josh Bryan hit six three-pointers off the bench.

The Battlin' Bears (7-2) will conclude their play at the Cactus Classic on Monday against MidAmerica Nazarene.
