Rocky Men’s Basketball Drops Second Straight Game to Conclude the Cactus Classic

CHANDLER, Ariz.- Twelve first-half turnovers plagued the Battlin' Bears as they lost their second game in as many days to conclude their play in the 2023 Cactus Classic. 

For the third consecutive game in Arizona, the Battlin' Bears struggled to put together defensive stops in the first half. The Pioneers finished the final four minutes on a 17-9 run, with guard Mekhi Elmore rattling off 10 of his 16 first-half points to lead his team to a 17-point halftime lead. MidAmerica Nazarene shot over 50% from the field in the half. 

The Rocky men have been able to subside their slow starts in their two more recent games leading into Monday's game with hot starts to the second half. Unfortunately, their struggles on the defensive end continued into the second half, as the Pioneers put together an early 15-6 run and ultimately decided the game's outcome midway through the second half. Rebounding was a large factor in Rocky's struggles, as MidAmerica Nazarene grabbed 14 offensive rebounds and outrebounded the Battlin' Bears by 12, the biggest margin this season. 

Freshman Liam Romei came into the weekend only appearing in two minutes of game time this season but played a solid role off the bench in Rocky's most recent two games. After scoring his first collegiate points on Sunday, Romei led the way with 16 points and four rebounds in the loss. Maxim Stephens added 14 points as the only other Battlin' Bear in double figures. 

The Battlin' Bears (7-3) will return home to host the Hampton Inn Green and Gold Classic starting Friday, December 29th. They will play Dickinson State and Southern Alberta Institute of Technology twice.
