Rocky Men’s Basketball Overcomes Slow Start to Defeat SAIT 89-62

BILLINGS, Mont.- The Rocky men didn't have their first lead until late into the first half, but once the Battlin' Bears got ahead they never gave it up, cruising to a 27-point victory on Friday.

Friday's matchup was a physical one from start to finish, which favored the Trojans early on. SAIT forced 14 Battlin' Bear turnovers in the first half and jumped out to a 19-9 lead after the first nine minutes of play. The physical nature of the matchup began to swing in Rocky's favor in the final 10 minutes of the half, as the Battlin' Bears worked their way to the free throw line frequently to take a four-point lead at the half.

The Rocky men got out quickly in the second half, as back-to-back three-pointers by Jesse Owens capped off an 8-2 run to start. SAIT's Geoffery James hit a three-pointer at the 10-minute mark to cut the Trojan deficit to 10, but Luca Brooks and Cade Tyson would respond with threes of their own to spring a game-deciding 24-2 run over the next six minutes of play. Free throw shooting would continue to be crucial for the Battlin' Bears, who totaled 46 attempts on the day, cashing in on 35 of them. Their 46 attempts are the most in a single game since 2017 when the Battlin' Bears attempted 45 free throws against Salish Kootenai. It is the fifth game this season Rocky has attempted more than 30 free throws in a single game and the second time they have made 30 or more.

Jesse Owens led the way for Rocky with 22 points and four assists. Kael Robinson added 16 points and eight rebounds, while Luca Brooks (12) and Elliott Brooks (10) also finished in double figures.

The Battlin' Bears (8-3) play their second of three games on Saturday evening when they take on Dickinson State. Tipoff will be at 7:30 pm at Lockwood High School.
