Rocky Men’s Basketball Concludes Non-Conference Play With a 68-64 Victory Over SAIT

BILLINGS, Mont.- The Battlin' Bears earned a hard-fought victory on Sunday afternoon to conclude their 2023-24 non-conference schedule.

A.J. Wilson kicked off the scoring with a three-pointer just seconds after the opening tip. An athletic and physical Trojans group responded with a 9-0 run to give Southern Alberta Institute of Technology a lead that they held for much of the first half. Jesse Owens sunk a pair of free throws inside the final minute to draw the game to a 32-32 tie.

The Trojans got the first two baskets of the half and continued to trade points with the Battlin' Bears for the first 10 minutes of the half. Kael Robinson scored on back-to-back possessions to spark an 8-0 run that gave Rocky a lead inside the final 10 minutes of play.

Back-and-forth play went on as the game entered the final three minutes. After Scott Malikie hit a pair of free throws, A.J. Wilson forced a steal that led to a Cade Tyson step-back jumper that gave Rocky a two-point edge. After Wilson hit a three-pointer to open up the contest, he hit one of the biggest shots of the game when he found space after Scott Malikie tipped out an offensive rebound to give Rocky a five-point lead heading inside the final minute. Kael Robinson and Malikie iced the game with their free throw shooting as Rocky earned their ninth victory of the season as they turn their attention to their Frontier Conference schedule in the new year.

Jesse Owens and A.J. Wilson each scored 14 points to lead the Battlin' Bears as they also combined for a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line. Kael Robinson tallied his seventh double-double of the season, scoring 12 points with 12 rebounds. Robinson also added four assists, three steals, and two blocks.

While it was another slow offensive game for Rocky's standards this season, they held the Trojans to under 40% shooting and only 20% from three-point range while forcing 18 turnovers.

The Battlin' Bears (9-4) begin Frontier Conference play on Saturday, January 6th in Butte against seventh-ranked Montana Tech.
