Rocky Men’s Basketball Falls in Overtime to #7 Montana Tech 85-80

BUTTE, Mont.- Four Battlin' Bears scored in double figures and three tallied double-doubles, but the #15 ranked Rocky men fell just short in a back-and-forth game with #7 Montana Tech in overtime.

Maxim Stephens was a force in the first half, grabbing eight offensive rebounds and getting to the free throw line 12 times, cashing in on seven of them. Neither team shot well from the field in the first half, as Rocky shot just 9-34 from the field and 4-17 from three, while the Orediggers were 15-39 from the field and just 3-17 at the half. Rocky finished the half on a 10-2 run to take a one-point lead entering the second half.

The first 10 minutes of the second half went back and forth throughout. A.J. Wilson snagged an offensive rebound before finding Luca Brooks for a three-pointer to tie the game at 54-54 with 9:28 remaining. It's often noted that basketball is a game of runs and Saturday's action proved that notion true. The Orediggers proceeded on a 13-2 run over the next three minutes to jump to an 11-point lead. Montana Tech was red hot from three-point range in the second half, hitting eight of their 11 attempts from deep.

How did the Battlin' Bears respond? By shutting out the Orediggers for the next six minutes of game time as Rocky rattled off a 14-0 run to grab a 70-67 lead going inside the final minute. Despite a frustrating night from the field overall, Jesse Owens scored seven of his 14 points during this run to lead the way. The Orediggers broke their dry spell when they needed it most with a three-pointer by Keeley Bake to tie the game in the final twenty seconds. After a missed jumper on the ensuing possession, Tech's Michael Ure drew a loose ball foul, sending him to the free throw line with a chance to secure a victory. Fortunately for the Battlin' Bears, Ure's free throw was short and the game would head to overtime.

More back-and-forth action continued in overtime as Kael Robinson hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 79-79 with 1:45 remaining. Tech's Asa Williams would get a jumper to fall on the following possession and Tech would hold their lead for the remainder of the period. The Battlin' Bears were unable to get a field goal to drop and Williams would sink clutch free throws to secure a Tech victory.

A.J. Wilson led the way for Rocky with 21 points and seven rebounds, his second 20+ point performance of the season. Maxim Stephens (15 points, 16 rebounds), Jesse Owens (14 points, 10 rebounds), and Kael Robinson (13 points, 10 rebounds) all tallied double-doubles in Saturday's loss.

Montana Tech was led by 22 points from Michael Ure and 21 points from Asa Williams.

The Battlin' Bears (9-5) return home to host the University of Providence on Thursday evening and MSU-Northern on Saturday afternoon.
