Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Brandon Stinson | Sports Information & Media Coordinator

Rocky Men’s Basketball Suffers Second Straight Loss; Fall 72-65 to Carroll College

BILLINGS, Mont.- The Battlin' Bears led for the majority of Thursday's contest, but the Fighting Saints finished the game on a 13-2 run to swipe a victory in the Fortin Education Center.

Jesse Owens started hot for the Battlin' Bears, scoring nine of Rocky's first 13 points of the game as they jumped out to a 13-6 lead. Kael Robinson hit a three-pointer with 6:15 remaining in the half to give Rocky their largest lead of the game at 27-18. The Frontier Conference's leading scorer Andrew Cook took the Saint's offense into his own hands to finish the half, scoring 10 points in the final six minutes of the half to lead Carroll on a 12-0 run to swipe the lead back. Jesse Owens got a layup to fall following a Carroll turnover to give Rocky a 31-30 lead with 2:09 to go in the half, a score that held until the break.

Both teams traded baskets back and forth in the first five minutes of the half, as Kael Robinson and Jesse Owens dropped back-to-back threes to give Rocky a two-point lead before the first media timeout. Neither team created much separation in the half, as Kael Robinson put in his fourth three-pointer to give Rocky a four-point lead with 5:32 remaining. That would be Rocky's last point scored for nearly three minutes of play as Carroll College would put together a 7-0 run to take a three-point lead. Cade Tyson would break the dry spell with a layup, but Rocky would go scoreless from then on, as the Fighting Saints would go 6-6 from the free throw line in the final three minutes to secure their third conference win, 72-65.

Jesse Owens would lead Rocky with 23 points, seven assists, and three steals. Kael Robinson added 18 points and four rebounds, while Maxim Stephens would finish with 12 points and eight rebounds. A.J. Wilson grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and four steals.  Rocky's 65 points would be the second-fewest in a game this season despite shooting over 40% from the field in the loss.

James Lang led the Fighting Saints with 27 points and nine rebounds, while Andrew Cook added 17 points and three steals.

The Rocky Men (10-7) will look ahead to their trip to Dillon to take on Montana Western on Saturday afternoon, with tip-off scheduled for 4:00 pm (MT).
