Rocky Men’s Basketball Falls in Overtime 109-104 in Dillon

BILLINGS, Mont.- Despite three players with 25 points on the afternoon, a Bulldog run in overtime handed the Rocky men their third straight conference loss.

The Rocky men had an impressive offensive display in the first half, shooting 60% from the field. Eight offensive turnovers for Rocky hurt them but they were able to hold a four-point lead at half.

The second half was back and forth throughout. A Maxim Stephens dunk inside five minutes gave Rocky a one-point lead, but Western's Christian Pitcher responded with a dunk of his own to take the lead right back.

Jesse Owens made a three-pointer with a minute and a half remaining to tie the game at 85-85. Both teams went scoreless until the final 10 seconds of regulation when Jalyn Stepney gave the Bulldogs a two-point lead with a reverse layup. After Montana Western tipped the ball out of bounds, Kael Robinson took the inbounds pass and put up a mid-range jumper that tied the game before the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

The Battlin' Bears were unable to piece together the stops they needed in the overtime period, as the Bulldogs got out to a six-point lead thanks to six straight possessions with a made basket. Rocky attempted some heroics, as Elliott Brooks and Kael Robinson each hit late three-pointers, but it was too little too late as the Battlin' Bears fell in overtime.

Maxim Stephens, Kael Robinson, and Jesse Owens all finished with 25 points on the afternoon. Owens added 10 assists, the first time a Battlin' Bear has dished 10 or more assists in a game since the 2017-18 season. Robinson finished with a team-high 10 rebounds and six assists, and Stephens grabbed nine rebounds, including seven offensive rebounds.

Montana Western had seven different players score in double figures, which was led by Michael Haverfield and Quincy Taylor scoring 20 points each. Both teams shot over 50% from the field, over 40% from the field, and over 80% from the free throw line.

The Rocky Men (10-8) will take on the University of Providence on Thursday, January 25th in Great Falls.
