Rocky Men’s Basketball Drops a Heartbreaker in Overtime to Carroll College 90-85

BILLINGS, Mont.- A shot at the buzzer in regulation rattled in and out for the Rocky men as they proceeded to fall in a thriller to Carroll College on Thursday evening.

The three-ball was the primary source of offense for the Battlin' Bears in the first half, with five of their nine field goals in the first 20 minutes coming from deep. The Fighting Saints extended a lead as large as 10 in the first half thanks to an offense that shot just below 50% in the half, but the Battlin' Bears held the Fighting Saints scoreless for the final three minutes of the half to cut their deficit to six.

A.J. Wilson kicked off the second half with a three-pointer that sparked an 8-0 run out of the gates to grab the lead back for the Battlin' Bears. After two straight Carroll College scores, Luca Brooks put together a 7-0 run by himself to give Rocky a five-point lead after the first five minutes of play in the second half. Carroll College would respond with a run of their own after three straight possessions ending in a basket to grab the lead back.

After the Fighting Saints grabbed a six-point lead, Kael Robinson began to take over the game offensively, scoring 10 of Rocky's 12 points in a 12-6 run that tied the game at 66-66 entering the final five minutes of regulation. Robinson would score 17 of his game-high 28 points in the second half.

Both teams went back and forth throughout regulation, as Kael Robinson gave Rocky a two-point lead with two minutes to go. After Carroll's James Lang tied the game back up, A.J. Wilson would fight for positioning inside for a layup to give Rocky a two-point lead inside a minute to play. Carroll College would get their chance to knot the game up inside the final 30 seconds which they would convert with 10 seconds remaining. The Battlin' Bears would get a good look for a game-winning shot, but their attempt rattled in and out, sending the matchup to overtime.

Kendall Moore would be the difference maker in overtime, scoring eight of Carroll's first 12 points as they were perfect from the field on their first four attempts. The Fighting Saints would hold an early lead in the overtime and ride it to a victory over Rocky on Thursday.

Kael Robinson was the game's leading scorer, finishing with 28 points, nine rebounds, and five assists, going 10-12 from the free throw line. Luca Brooks added 17 points (8-8 FT) and six rebounds, while Kade Erickson, in his first appearance of the season for the Battlin' Bears, debuted with 15 points, 7 rebounds, and two blocks. The Rocky men were excellent from the free throw line in the loss, going 32-36 from the charity stripe.

The Frontier Conference leading scorer Andrew Cook led the Saints with 23 points. James Lang added 18 points and nine rebounds.

The Rocky men (12-15, 3-11 conf.) will conclude their regular season with a matchup against Montana Western at home on Saturday afternoon to celebrate Senior Day.
