Wirkkala Leaps ‘A’ Standard as Rocky Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season at Lockwood High School

BILLINGS, Mont.- Senior Brooke Wirkkala tied for the best high jump mark in the NAIA so far this season as Rocky Track and Field competed in their first outdoor meet of the season on Saturday. 

Men's Notable Results

Ryan LaMere broke the 200-meter program record on his way to winning the event with a time of 21.54 seconds. He also finished fourth in the 100 meters, crossing the line in 11.01 seconds, the eighth fastest time in program history. 

Taycen Genatone set a new program record in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.80 seconds, finishing fourth overall. He also took second in the long jump. 

Keenan Morris earned the program record in the high jump in his first outdoor collegiate meet, clearing 1.96 meters (6-05) to take second place. Campbell Smith had a strong showing as well, clearing 1.86 meters (6-01.25), the third-best mark in program history. Morris also won the pole vault, clearing 4.65 meters (15-03), while Smith took third in the long jump. 

Mason Meier set a new program record in the javelin throw with a best mark of 53.11 meters (174-03), while Travis Caton followed with the second-best toss in program history at 46.24 meters (151-08). 

Raynor Ranum was just inches from the program record in the discus, taking third place with a throw of 44.02 meters (144-05). Ranum also finished third in the shot put with a mark of 14.90 meters (48-10.75), the third-best mark in program history. 

Logan Hughes won the hammer throw with a best mark of 49.60 meters (162-08), the sixth-best mark in program history. 

Caleb Tomac and John Spinti finished 1-2 in the 800 meters, with Tomac finishing with a time of 2:01.01 and Spinti following in 2:02.62. 

Corbyn Svec and Zachary Zwiesler also earned top-two finishes in the 1,500 meters, as Svec ran a personal best 4:04.89 to take the victory, with Zwiesler following in 4:05.92. 

Matthew Conrad finished second in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:47.50. 

The Battlin' Bears finished second overall as a team, totaling 149 points. Montana Tech earned the team title with 159 points. 
 
Women's Notable Results

Brooke Wirkkala broke her own program record and became the first Battlin' Bear to secure a qualifying mark this season, clearing 1.73 meters (5-08), an 'A' Standard qualifying mark. Her mark ties the best mark in the NAIA so far this season. Wirkkala also won the long jump with a mark of 5.62 meters (18-05.25), another program record for the senior. 

Charlize Davis earned a victory in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.89 seconds. Davis also earned a third-place finish in the 100-meter with a time of 12.77 seconds. 

Olivia Field won the triple jump with a mark of 10.43 meters (34-02.75), the sixth-best mark in program history. 

Maya Pearcy and Kallyn Wilkins secured the top two places in the 1,500 meters, as Pearcy won with a time of 4:52.38, while Wilkins followed in 5:06.53. 

Jayden Woodland won the 5,000 meters with a time of 19:03.81. 

Hannah Christman earned a win in the pole vault, clearing 2.90 meters (9-06.25). 

The Rocky 4x400 meter relay team of Baylee Young, Maya Pearcy, Kallyn Wilkins, and Rylie Schoenfeld finished second overall with a time of 4:13.11, the fourth fastest time in program history. 

The Battlin' Bears finished second overall in the team standings, totaling 118 team points. Co-host MSU Billings won the meet with 186 total points. 

Up Next

Rocky Track and Field will travel to Missoula next Saturday to compete in the Al Manual Invitational.
