Rocky Women’s Basketball Takes on Lewis-Clark State Warriors Wednesday Evening

LEWISTON, Idaho- After defeating sixth-seeded Menlo College on Tuesday night, eleventh seeded Rocky Women's Basketball will take on Lewis-Clark State College on Wednesday night. 

Battlin' Bears Recap: Rocky women's basketball (20-10) defeated Menlo College 68-62 on Tuesday evening. Kloie Thatcher took the game into her own hands, scoring 17 of her 30 points in the fourth quarter alone as the Battlin' Bears scored 28 points in the fourth quarter to take the eight six point victory. While the Rocky women struggled taking care of the basketball with 22 turnovers in the game, they shot the ball efficiently, shooting 48.5% from the field and 40% from three in the win.

Scouting the Warriors: Lewis-Clark State College (29-3) enters the National Tournament as a third seed after receiving an automatic bid for winning the Cascade Collegiate Conference regular season title after going 21-1 in their conference schedule. The Warriors defeated Simpson University 73-55 on Tuesday evening to advance to the second round. Senior Hannah Broyles was the Warrior's leading scorer against Simpson, scoring 18 points and dishing four assists. 

The Battlin' Bears took on Lewis-Clark State in their second and third games of this season, in which the Warriors were victorious in both games. At the time of the games, the Battlin' Bears were ranked 25th in the NAIA, while Lewis-Clark State College was ranked 22nd. The first matchup between these two teams saw Rocky struggle from the field, shooting only 30% from the field while turning the ball over 20 times as the Warriors took a lopsided victory in Lewiston. 

The following night turned into a highly contested matchup, which saw Mackenzie Dethman hit a game tying layup with only 20 seconds remaining in regulation, and the Warriors missing two free throws in the final seconds of the game to go to a first overtime. Morgan Baird hit a jumper with 40 seconds remaining in the first overtime to tie the game back up at 66-66, but Baird missed a jumper at the buzzer to send the game into a second overtime. The Warriors' defense took over in the second overtime, holding the Battlin' Bears without a field goal in the final three minutes to take an 80-73 victory. Callie Stevens scored 28 points in the second matchup to lead Lewis-Clark State College, while Kloie Thatcher and Morgan Baird each scored 22 in the loss. 

The Warriors are led by five All-Cascade Conference performers, highlighted by back to back Conference Player of the Year Callie Stevens (14.3 ppg, 3.6 apg, 1.7 spg). Senior guard Hannah Broyles (13.2 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 2.3 apg, 1.7 spg, 36.9 3pt%) and junior forward Maddie Holm (10.2 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 1.7 spg) were also named First Team All-Conference along with Stevens. Sophomore guard Ellie Sander (10.6 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 2.5 apg, 2.3 spg, 48.2% fg%) was named as an All-Conference Honorable Mention and guard Sitara Byrd (5.1 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 44% FG%) was named the conference's Freshman of the Year. 

A Trip to Sioux City on the Line: The winner of tonight's matchup will move on to the Round of 16 at the NAIA Women's Basketball National Championship Final Site in Sioux City, Iowa. Round of 16 games will be played on March 13th and 14th and the winner of this game will take on the winner of Clarke University and Freede-Hardeman University.
