GAME NOTES: Rocky Women’s Basketball Looks to Bounce Back Against the Skylights Saturday Afternoon

BILLINGS, Mont.- The Battlin' Bears seek their eighth consecutive victory over MSU-Northern on Saturday afternoon.

Matchup

#12 Rocky Mountain College (11-3) vs MSU-Northern (7-8)
Saturday, January 13th | 2:00pm (MT)| Fortin Education Center

Battlin' Bear Recap

The Rocky women faced MSU-Northern four times last season, winning all four matchups. These two teams faced off in the Frontier Conference Quarterfinals last season, with Rocky taking a 70-61 victory. The Battlin' Bears have won each of the last seven straight games against the Skylights, their last loss being in Havre during the 2020-21 season.

The Battlin' Bears have been held under 70 points just four times this season, three of which have resulted in losses. After a 60-51 defeat to the University of Providence, Rocky's two straight losses mark just the third time in the past three years that the
Battlin' Bears have lost consecutive games. After a streak of four out of five games where Rocky made 10 or more three-pointers, the Battlin' Bears have shot just 11-46 from deep over their last two games.

Freshman Angie Cavanaugh has established herself as one of the conference's best shooters early in her career, as she is the only qualified player to shoot over 40% from deep. She has made at least one three-pointer in 11 of 14 games this season and has five games with two or more made three-pointers. Cavanaugh, along with teammates Iliana Moran, Gracee Lekvold, and Ky Oliver, are four of just 18 players in the Frontier Conference to average one or more made three-pointers per game this season.

Preview

The Skylights enter Saturday's game after an exciting overtime victory over Montana Tech, featuring a last-second three-pointer by Taya Trottier to give MSU-Northern their first conference victory of the season.

Northern scores primarily out of the post, with their top three scorers this season all being forwards that combine for less than one three-pointer made per game. Junior Savannah Toms and senior Ryley Kehr each average over 11 points per game so far this season and rank third and fourth in the Frontier Conference in field goal percentage, respectively. Being post-dominant, Northern rebounds the ball well, averaging 26.8 defensive rebounds per game, ranking second in the Frontier Conference. Four Skylights average four or more rebounds per game, led by Krass grabbing seven per game which ranks fifth in the Frontier Conference.

Common opponents this season between Rocky and the Skylights include MSU Billings, Northwest University, Corban University, Valley City State, and Montana Tech. Both teams fell to MSU Billings and defeated Northwest and Corban University, while the Battlin' Bears earned a victory over Valley City and Northern defeated Montana Tech.

The Skylights have won three of their last four games, while the Battlin' Bears will look to secure their first conference victory on Saturday afternoon.
